HISTORY

The Finnegans Wake discussions at the Joyce center at DU- MOO started in October of 1994. The first group started with Book II, chapter i and has worked its way line-by-line to the seventh page of this typically dense chapter. The second group has moved more slowly covering only three pages of Book I, chapter iv. My purpose in starting these groups was to determine to what extent the atmosphere at a MOO was conducive to the sort of discussions so many Wakeans take part in around the country. At the beginning of the project I was not even sure the idea would work. But as I wandered through several of the numerous MOOs I could find in cyberspace encountering people from around the world in them, including a number of Joyceans, the possibility of establishing a site for the use of the world-joycean community seemed more and more intriguing.

Once I found DU-MOO, a relatively serious MOO not as much plagued by the overcrowding found at so many MOOs, the possibilities really began to solidify. But only after a few meetings had actually taken place did the numerous advantages of the real-time cyberspatial groups begin to show themselves.
