In Bloom

A site devoted to the work, life and study of James Joyce. Contains a number of essays on Dubliners, Portrait of the Artist, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake and a good biography of Joyce's life.

Joyce Carol Oates on Ulysses
A very comprehensive essay that examines Joyce's comic vision in Ulysses. Oates sees Ulysses as a Swiftian satire and he looks at the comic in Joyce's style, structure and characters, areas that are often overlooked in Joycean criticism.

Joyce reads from the Wake
On this site you can hear Joyce read from Finnegans Wake. The corresponding text is also included. You need to have RealAudio to be able to listen to the reading but you can download this from the site.

Joyce's Poems
This site has the text for some of Joyce's poems. Poems included are Chamber Music (II and IV) and a collection from Pomes Penyeach. Although the site is still under construction it promises regular updates of more poems.

Joyce's schema for Ulysses
A chart representing one of the two schemas Joyce used to describe the structures of Ulysses. The charts were drafted at a late stage in the writing of Ulysses and are not Joyce's "blueprint" for the novel but do give a useful idea of its structure and would prove useful in producing a timeline of the novel.

Map of the Dublin of Ulysses
A map of modern day Dublin with links to descriptions of locations with their relevance to Joyce's work. Contains locations form Ulysses, Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist. Useful in putting some of the stories in context.

Online criticism
A collection of essays and papers on Joyce from a number of different writers. The essays are mostly concerned with Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. This site also includes a useful bibliography of paper-based Joycean criticism.

The origins of Finnegans Wake
This site looks at Joyce's notes for Finnegans Wake, in sequence, along with the first draft versions of the first four "Finn's Hotel" vignettes. The site also gives biographical information putting Joyce's notes into the context of his life at the time of writing.

Ulysses for dummies: the cartoon version
A site that contains animated cartoons of episodes from Ulysses with brief text accompaniment. The animations are very basic but this site could be useful if you wish to produce a timeline of the novel.
