Happy throng, off to war
The expression "the first
casualty when war comes is truth" dates from World War I, when newly invented
propaganda techniques first harnessed the considerable power of a highly
developed advertising industry to the political aims of the nation-state.
Joseph Goebbels' Ministry of Propaganda was deeply indebted to Britain's
Ministry of Information, established in 1918 to centralize the control
of wartime information.
