MOO-COMMANDS:
Here are just a few commands to make your first visits to DU-MOO
easier and more profitable. The convention when showing someone
the ropes is to surround the commands with apostrophes which are
discarded when using the commands. Also discarded when executing
commands are the pointed brackets <s and >s which surround
keystrokes or information you must supply.
- '"<whatever you want to say><enter>'
is the basic command for speaking. If I type "Don't crush
that dwarf, hand me the pliers.<enter> the others in the
room will see a line reading: michael says "Don't crush that
dwarf, hand me the pliers."
- 'look <enter>'
Is a handy command that will get you a description of the
room you are in at the moment as well as a list of objects
and fellow citizens in the room with you. This command also
tells you where the exits are. (exits are located at the
compass points so you can use them by typing an abbreviated
form of the compass direction. i.e., n, s, e, w, nw, ne,
sw, se.)
- 'help <enter>'
Will provide you with a basic menu of topics on which you
might want help, such as movement, speech, and other topics.
'look' <anyone's name><enter>' will allow you to 'see'
another character. What you "see" is the description that
character has written for heself or himself.
- '@join <anyone's name><enter>'
allows you to 'teleport' to the side of anyone you have
named on the MOO. It is only considered polite to 'join'
another citizen if you have received permission to do so.
So you should 'page' them first, unless that permission has
been extended in advance. (All Joyceans for instance are
invited to 'join' me by entering '@join michael <enter>' at
any time).
- '' <anyone's name><any message you want><enter>'
uses an apostrophe followed by the name of the character you
want to contact to send out a page to the citizen you have
named. If I enter the command ''Jeanne May I join you
<enter>' Jeanne will receive a message saying where I am and
informing her that I would like to join her.
- 'look blackboard<enter>'
If the room has a blackboard this command will cause it's
messages to appear on your screen. The blackboard at the
Joyce Center contains announcements of meeting times,
schedual changes, and instructions for reading the notice
board.
- '@describe me as <your description><enter>'
sets a description of your character for others to see. You
should also set your gender so the computer will use the
correct pronouns in describing you to others. 'help gender
<enter>' will get you instructions for designating which
gender you want your character to assume.
